A crown restores a tooth that is broken, damaged, or decayed. At Lala Dental, the crown is a cap that covers the tooth entirely and is cemented in place. It typically takes two appointments to restore a tooth with a crown.Â
How Is a Dental Crown Placed?
To prepare your tooth for a crown, Dr. Meshkin will remove the decayed area or old filling and clean and prepare the tooth for the crown. Then, Dr. Meshkin will take impressions of your mouth and send them to a lab where a skilled technician will use them to create a crown that fits your tooth perfectly. It typically takes about two weeks for your crown to be completed. Once it is ready, you’ll return to Dr. Meshkin to have the crown in your mouth. Dr. Meshkin will first clean the area on your tooth that will hold the crown, then place it on it and ensure it’s securely attached. Dr. Meshkin will make any final adjustments to ensure it fits appropriately before polishing it to make it look completely natural.
The Benefits of Dental Crowns
A crown or cap is a restoration that fits over the top of a damaged tooth to improve its appearance and restore its strength and function. Crowns are also used to change the shape of a tooth, close a gap between two teeth, protect a weak tooth from breaking or restore a tooth after root canal therapy back to its standard shape and size.
The lifespan of a crown depends on the quality of the materials and the care you receive in maintaining it over time. Dr. Meshkin will discuss the best maintenance plan for you, but you’ll typically brush twice daily and floss once daily to maintain good oral hygiene. Also, avoid chewing hard foods on the tooth that has received the crown so that it does not break or become damaged.
Some people also choose to cover their temporary crown with a permanent crown to improve their smile’s appearance and function immediately until they can schedule their next dental appointment. This can be a great way to get the beautiful smile you’re looking for in just one day! If you are unhappy with the appearance of your smile due to a broken, damaged or cracked tooth, call Dr. Meshkin to discuss whether a crown is right for you!
