What is PBM?

Photobiomodulation therapy is also called low-level laser therapy or cold laser therapy. It uses low-powered lasers or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to affect cellular function within a damaged area. This type of therapy is non-invasive, meaning it does not require surgery or incisions. Instead, the therapy uses light waves to stimulate cell function.

The light therapy does not generate heat. Instead, it produces a type of energy called photons. Light therapy treatments typically last less than 10 minutes, depending on the condition being treated.

What is LLLT?

LLLT is a broad term that describes the use of monochromatic light or laser light to treat musculoskeletal conditions. LLLT can replace or complement other therapies to help relieve pain and inflammation.

How does PBM work?

The wavelengths used in a PBM treatment are between 600-900 nm. Applying this wavelength to the tissues is absorbed by chromophores such as cytochrome c oxidase, NADH, and porphyrin. These chromophores convert light energy into usable energy. This energy is used to promote cell repair, reduce oxidative stress, and reduce pain in the area where the beam is applied.

Who can benefit from PBM?

PBM therapy has many benefits for chronic and acute conditions. This includes relieving pain, reducing inflammation and swelling, improving tissue repair, and decreasing healing time.

Is PBM safe?

PBM therapy is generally safe and non-invasive. You may feel some warmth in the treatment area, as well as a slight tingling or prickling sensation. This shouldn’t last long and shouldn’t be painful.

Is PBM painful?

PBM is painless. Many patients describe the sensation as similar to the sensation of a deep tissue massage. Many patients will feel relief immediately, although relief is often felt gradually over the course of several treatments.

Is PBM covered by insurance?

PBM is usually covered by insurance. Consult with your dentist to determine coverage.

Some of the benefits of PBM include:

1. Lessens pain and inflammation

2. Reduces swelling

3. Encourages tissue repair

4. Strengthens the immune system
