What is PBM therapy?

Photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) is a noninvasive treatment that can kill bacteria that cause gum disease. It uses light energy to penetrate the tissue. Studies have shown PBM to be effective in treating gingivitis.

PBM may be used to treat the gums, tongue, and inside of the cheeks. It can also be used to treat the gingiva, or gums, and sulcular epithelium of the mouth.

How does it work?

PBM therapy is an advanced dental technology that uses a combination of red and infrared light wavelengths to reduce bacteria that promote gum disease. The process is also used to accelerate healing after procedures, such as laser gum therapy.

During PBM therapy, you sit comfortably in the dental chair. The dentist covers your gums with a protective covering, which will be removed before the procedure begins. A handpiece with a carefully calibrated laser tip is moved gently across your teeth and gums. The laser tip is pointed directly at the gums, which absorb the light wavelengths.

The laser tip delivers red and infrared light pulses that reduce oral bacteria. As the bacteria are reduced, your gums become healthier and stronger and are less likely to develop harmful infections.

Who can benefit?

PBM therapy can be beneficial for those who have experienced tooth decay, periodontal disease, or oral ulcers. It can also be beneficial for patients who are struggling with dry mouth due to medication, stress, or aging.

Are there side effects?

PBM is non-invasive therapy that uses lasers, LEDs, and pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs). PBM is painless, has no side effects, and is a safe alternative to medication and invasive procedures.

How long does it take?

PBM treatment usually takes about 30 minutes, and patients can return to their daily routine, including work, school, and normal physical activities, right after.

Patients may experience some slight sensitivity or discomfort following the procedure, but that usually fades away after a day or two. We recommend that patients avoid eating or drinking anything except water immediately following treatment, though.

The most common side effect is tooth sensitivity, which is temporary. Other side effects include tooth pain and gum irritation.

How often do I need treatment?

PBM therapy is a nonsurgical, non-invasive procedure. Patients often undergo multiple treatments to achieve optimal results. Some patients may need only one treatment, while others may need several.

How much does PBM therapy cost?

During your visit with your dentist, your oral tissues will be evaluated to determine if PBM therapy is right for you. If it is, you can schedule multiple appointments for PBM therapy, or schedule a single appointment for a series of PBM treatments.

A single PBM therapy appointment typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes. Your dentist will apply light to the surface of your mouth for 5 to 10 minutes, and you will be asked to sit beneath a dental laser. After your treatment, you can return to your daily activities right away.
