Lumineers are an ultra-thin type of veneer, sometimes referred to as a contact lens, which are placed over the front surface of teeth. They are made entirely of cerinate porcelain.
Lumineers are an extremely aesthetic option that don’t require drilling. They’re also reversible, as LUMINEERS can be removed and swapped for veneers or crowns.
Lumineers, also known as dental veneers, are thin shells of tooth-colored porcelain which are designed to cover the front side of teeth. They are extremely thin (about 1 mm thick), but they resist stains and look completely natural.
To begin, the dentist will prepare the teeth by removing a very thin layer of enamel. This process ensures that there is enough space for the lumineers to fit. Then, a mold or digital scan of the teeth will be made and sent to a dental lab. The dental lab will send back the final lumineers, which the dentist will bond to the teeth. This entire process can be completed within just two appointments.
Though both lumineers and veneers are thin shells of dental porcelain that are bonded to the teeth, they are vastly different in their purpose.
Unlike veneers, lumineers do not require the removal of healthy tooth structure. Instead, they are bonded directly to the natural teeth. Since lumineers don’t require the removal of tooth structure to be placed, they are sometimes considered less invasive than veneers.
Lumineers are an alternative to dental crowns. They are made of porcelain, but are more translucent than porcelain dental crowns. When compared to porcelain crowns, lumineers are thinner, so don’t require as much of the tooth to be shaved down.
What’s the difference between Lumineers and dental bridges?
Lumineers are very thin and translucent shells of porcelain that are affixed to the teeth. While they look completely natural, they do not provide the same strength as dental bridges.
Dental bridges are anchored by crowns on adjacent teeth. The false tooth or teeth in the middle are suspended between crowns and sit on top of the gums.
Lumineers are often compared to dental veneers. However, lumineers are crafted from a thin, durable porcelain material. The thinness of the porcelain lumineer allows them to be placed over the teeth without altering the structure of the teeth. They can also be placed over existing dental work without causing damage to other teeth.
