Gone are the days when we only had plain water to rinse our mouths after brushing. These days there are multiple types of mouthwashes that can be used after you clean your teeth. Why use a mouthwash rinse? After loosening food particles between the teeth and gums, you want to wash away the residual debris and plaque-causing bacteria.
Some mouthwashes are marketed to freshen the breath and they come in a variety of minty flavors to do just that. If you want to kill germs that cause bad breath, you will want to pick up an antiseptic mouthwash that has chlorhexidine gluconate in it to accomplish that. Other types of mouthwash contain sodium fluoride which helps your tooth enamel to stay strong.
Whatever mouthwash you need, look for the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance on the package. This will ensure that the product has been tested and is safe and effective.
You may have seen marketing claims that using an antibacterial mouthwash can kill the germs which cause plaque. Antibacterial rinses can kill the bacteria living on the plaque’s surface but it cannot kill the bacteria within the plaque itself. Dental floss on the other hand breaks apart the bacteria’s microcosm, which can then be rinsed away, along with any stuck food particles between the teeth and the gums and gum line.
So yes, replacing your daily flossing routine with an antibacterial mouthwash is too good to be true. But take heart! Your teeth and gums will appreciate your excellent oral hygiene routine.
Use ADA approved products so you know they are safe and effective, brush those teeth and gums and floss diligently between and around them, rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash, and be sure to see your dentist every six months to get the thorough, deep cleaning that your daily routine can’t catch.
